My New - What's Yours?

March is one of my favorite times of the year. It signals the start of “the New.” Soon we will have new trees, flowers, and of course new baby animals! Daylight savings takes place—giving us a glimpse of summer that is yet to come. This year is especially important since it marks a year with COVID. We knew so little then, and feared everything. We lost so many lives and we have learned so much. I hope we will soon have a new beginning there as well.

In addition, March holds a special place in my heart as it is the birth month for two of my children. Born on March 17th, St. Patrick’s Day, they would both now share their birthday with a holiday. I remember we would have one party, two cakes and I always wanted it St. Patrick’s Day themed. When they were little, under 5, it wasn’t a problem. As they got older they wanted their own themes and eventually they wanted their own parties. Christine (my oldest) has since told me that she thought Conor (my son) “took” her birthday. Since we are a blended family, I am sure, to Christine, it felt that way. DJ and I got married when she was 4 and Conor was only 2. Conor was too little to know the difference, but Christine had to start sharing her day. With the kids now turning 22 and 24, I no longer feel compelled to lump all of the celebrating into one day. In fact, I am mindful and curious about the reason for the holiday and how I will relate to that with my celebration.

On my quest to discover what this holiday is about and how I may celebrate it in good fashion, I found some interesting facts. St. Patrick was a missionary that came to Ireland and was instrumental in the country adopting Christianity. The day that is celebrated is actually the day of his death; which is customary for all saints. It was not associated with “partying and drinking” at first. In fact, it was a day of reflection and prayer. I think that is very appropriate, especially this year. It wasn’t until it made its way to the United States, through Irish immigrants, that it became the craziness that it is today. Beer seems to be the favorite drink—green beer to be exact. Guinness is really the Irish drink of choice, but whiskey works too.

With COVID restrictions still in place, I haven’t figured out the “HOW” I’m going to celebrate this year. However, the “WHAT” is perfectly clear— it will be to reflect on “My New.” This refers to my new work family that makes me feel lucky every day; my family and friends (old and new) that give me continued support; and my new business and blog. I’m going to also celebrate what the rest of 2021 has in store for me. It may not be easy, but it will be worth it. I’ve decided I’m even going to celebrate the past! We should value all we learn from past mistakes, and of course remember to celebrate the successes; that is what makes us who we are today. Lastly, I know I personally won’t be celebrating by drinking beer, so I’m going to try “Ron Rubin 2012 Pinot Noir, Green Valley, Sonoma”. It is an excellent choice for St. Patrick’s Day! What are your plans?

For now,

Angela
