Mindset Matters

There is a saying that goes something like, “Life isn’t about the destination, it’s about the ride.” I think that holds true for starting a company too. Unfortunately, like many things, you don’t control the “ride". You aren’t really even driving.

A week ago, on the way to a dinner with friends, we learned we had closed a deal. We were so excited! The whole weekend I was pumped! I couldn’t turn off my brain—thinking about what we needed to do next, whom we would hire, getting the contract signed etc. WOW, we are growing fast! My ride was going smoothly.

Tuesday came and I had an unexpected twist on my ride. One of our employees decided to pursue another opportunity. I was happy for him, yet sad for myself. The excitement is gone. My ride is not fun. I am full of doubt, confusion, anxiety, and questions. Lots of questions. Can I really do this? What did we do wrong? How are we going to fulfill this new client? How are we going to backfill this position? Are others going to leave? Should I just go get a job? Yes, I immediately went there.

Yet, the funniest thing happened. I woke up Wednesday ready. No questions, no anxiety. Just ready—anxiety, confusion, questions, all gone! I was ready to work and continue on my ride of my original vision for this company. I realized his decision wasn’t about me or augustwenty (our company). It wasn’t what I had done wrong or right. It was just about his ride.

I have learned a lot these first few months. I have learned that I doubt myself a lot. Yet, I have learned that I have the best group of coworkers, friends and family to support me when I do. I have learned taking a chance is scary but worth it. I have learned that you have to choose between what you want to do and what you can do. Most importantly, I have learned that this is hard. It is an emotional rollercoaster that you are continuously riding. You are never going to control the ride, but you do get to decide how you respond to it. I've decided I am going to celebrate it!

For now,

Angela
